3 Steps to Your Best Labor Day Weekend

Aug 29, 2018

A three-day weekend.  Woo hoo!  A gift of time.

Now, what to do with it?

Use this 3 step process to get the most out of this opportunity:

  1. Assess
  2. Plan
  3. Enjoy!

First, assess your needs.

What kind of day or weekend do you need/want?

  • Since the kids just started school, do you need a catch up day?
  • Maybe a last summer hurrah? Beach day, pool party, BBQ?
  • Is it a well deserved rest day?
  • Or last chance for a weekend away for a while?
  • Perhaps a combo?

Sit quietly for just a moment and ask yourself what you need most. The first soft answer that comes to mind out of the silence is usually the real one.

(By the way, this technique works for almost any question. It’s your intuition speaking. The “voice” is usually soft at first, but if you practice listening, it gets louder. The easiest way to hear it is with a still mind. A still mind can be cultivated with a consistent meditation practice.)

Second, make a plan.

What will you need to make sure you can have what you want?

  • Do you need to go shopping?
  • Do you need to pack?
  • Do you need to make reservations?
  • Do you have to cancel something?
  • Call some friends?

Make a quick list of the things you need to do to ensure your weekend goes smoothly. Then do them.

Anticipating your needs and arranging for them to be met is a very grown-up thing to do. Taking responsibility in this way cuts down on disappointments and drama.

A drama-free weekend sounds good, doesn’t it?

Third, enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Now that you made your decision and planned for its success, you get to have fun.

Conscious decisions make it easier to be present in the moment. Less mental noise to distract and delay.

The assessment and plan allow you to be pointed in the right direction. Everything may not go exactly as planned but it’ll be a whole lot closer than if you left it up to chance.

As Yogi Berra said, “If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”

This process works for weight loss too.

Let’s take this weekend as an example:

  1. Assess your weekend eating plans in accordance with your goals.
  2. Plan the food choices that will make you most happy while still allowing for your goals to be realized.
  3. Enjoy your weekend and your weight loss progress.

Three basic steps to get you what you want. This weekend or any other.

I’d love to know what you planned for the weekend. Comment below!
