Sour Grapes

Jul 04, 2018

I love grapes. Sweet. Satisfying. I buy them all the time.

And my husband taught me a valuable grape-purchasing trick: in the market, I taste-test the grapes. I try one in the pack to make sure it’s a good batch. I only get the best.

I never used to do this, but since I lost 50 pounds and have kept it off for over 9 years now, I care much more about the quality of my food.

It sounds obvious—we all care about the quality of our food?!

But, I’ll admit, I used to be less vigilant about it.

If a fruit cup in a restaurant looked a little tired, I would eat it anyway instead of asking for a fresher one. If there were only crumbs in the bottom of the chip bag, I would just use the handheld vac afterward. If the chocolate cake was dry—who cares?! It’s chocolate cake!

But once I started being mindful of what I put in my mouth—a necessity if you are going to lose weight and keep it off—I no longer wanted to waste my calorie bank account on chip crumbs or lousy cake.

I only want the best.

Now, I’m not eating caviar and drinking champagne at every meal. I have found the veggies, fruits and proteins that I like best and make my body feel great. I did that through trial and error and then I make sure I have those things available to me. Any treats or extras are well thought out.

Which brings me to See’s Candies.

There’s a See’s Candies shop near my house. My kids love that treat, so we go in from time to time.

That is some good stuff! Once I was reminded of what candy could taste like, grocery store candy just wouldn’t do. If I’m going to have candy, it has to be See’s quality.

Elevate your standards.

Once you are willing to do it with food, it’s amazing what comes next.

Hanging out with negative friends no longer makes sense. Watching boring TV shows or movies, or finishing books you don’t enjoy doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Your time is precious.

Your clothing, home surroundings, your work environment—do they lift you?

We only get one go around, so make it count. That doesn’t mean that every meal or moment has to be one-of-a-kind. Just worth it to you.

It means you are responsible for the life you lead.

Make it awesome. You definitely deserve it.
