Spring Cleaning

Apr 04, 2018

When the sun starts breaking through the clouds and shoots begin peeking though the soil, do you feel like it’s time to start fresh?

I do!

I love the idea of a fresh start.

The rain (and we’ve even had some in Southern California) purifies everything, signaling a new beginning.

Spring cleaning can be our purification process.

Now, I love a good de-cluttering session—a clean, organized closet or drawer makes my heart skip a beat.

But I have something else in mind.

Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. A time of hope and possibility. Creation.

So, if we want to birth something, something big, we have to get rid of something even bigger first.

As the saying goes, “Out with the old and in with the new!”

Notice that it’s not the other way around.

Adding more without taking stuff away just makes for a very full plate (and a cranky plate-owner).

So I invite you to think deeply about what you can let go of.

A little internal spring cleaning.

What will you purge to make way for the newest part of you?

Here is a list to get you thinking—how would it feel if you gave up:

  • Relationships that are only draining
  • Having to please all of the people all of the time
  • Worrying
  • FOMO (fear of missing out)
  • Perfectionism
  • Endless Social Media
  • Self-flagellation
  • Faking anything
  • Saying Yes when you really mean No
  • Rushing
  • Anything that no longer fits
  • Negative thinking

Can you imagine the space? The breathing room? Ahhhhh.

The truth is each item on the list above is a habit. Rushing is a habit, negative thoughts are a habit, and habits can be shifted.

It all starts with awareness (Sound familiar? All change starts with awareness.)

So, if you take on the challenge this Spring, choose one thing you want to release and become very aware when it is happening. Then lovingly notice and make a different choice.

That is it.  Simple.

Not easy, but simple.

And with time and persistence you will feel the change.

You will have made way for the newer thing to be born.
