Summer is Great Environmental Control

May 23, 2018

It’s official!  Summer’s a-comin’.

This weekend marks the beginning of bathing suit season. And I think you can start wearing white. (Is that still a thing?)

It’s the season for BBQs, swimming, getaways, longer days and warmer nights.

The combo of more daylight to fit in exercise, hotter weather that may curb appetite and encourage hydration and yummy seasonal fruit that can replace denser desserts makes summer the biggest and best environmental controller on Earth, literally.

Environmental control is not only when temptation is out of sight, but also when your surroundings encourage desired behaviors. So start taking advantage of all this season has to offer by way of:

Cleaner foods. Simple whole foods are more often on offer. BBQ chicken, steak, grilled veggies including corn on the cob, simple salads and watermelon, cherries, plums, and peaches. Tasty and satisfying. Skip the bun or mayo-laden salads and you are easily on your way to your goal.

Water, water everywhere. Drink up. Staying hydrated helps the body do everything better. It’s often easier to remember to drink water when it’s hot outside. About 2 liters a day would be a great baseline with more after baking at the beach or sweating from exercise.

Freer movement. More time, more light, more nature available to get your movement on. Whether it’s swimming in the ocean or walking along the shore, biking or hiking the national park trails, meeting up for baseball or beach volleyball, movement is more fun in summer. So pick something and get to it.

Relaxing. We tend to give ourselves a break more often in the summer. From vacations to lazy days reading novels, we allow for down time. Giving our body and mind a rest rejuvenates the system. It’s the flip side of the busy-ness coin—vital to our creativity and growth. And it gives us energy to pursue our goals.

Simpler foods, easy water, fun outdoor activities and relaxation make summer the perfect time to start or keep up momentum on your journey to a healthy weight.

Thank you, Summer!
